The G.I. Bill and online education

The G.I. Bill is a law that began in 1944 that was established in order to provide benefits for veterans returning from World War II, including lower mortgages, living expenses, and education expenses to go toward college. Now, the G.I. Bill also covers tuition at an online institution. Online schools are making it easier for military personnel to complete their education.

The chart below outlines how the bill works and what students need to be aware of when using their benefits:

What is the G.I. Bill? The G.I. Bill is a group of benefits available to veterans, service members, and immediate family members.
What does the G.I. Bill cover? The G.I. Bill covers the cost of education and training programs, including undergraduate and graduate studies, vocational schools, and technical training. The bill covers 100% of tuition costs, but only to a certain amount. The amount changes if you’re active-duty or on reserve and whether your program is part-time or full-time.
How does the G.I. Bill work? There are two types of G.I. Bills:

  • Post-9/11 G.I. Bill: Provides up to 36 months of education benefits, generally payable for 15 years following release from active duty and pays for full tuition and fees for public in-state students. (Private schools and foreign schools have a cap.)
  • Montgomery G.I. Bill: Provides up to 36 months of benefits, payable for up to 10 years following release from active duty.
Can I use my benefits for an online school? Yes. Depending on your eligibility, many online schools accept the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill and the Montgomery G.I. Bill and will you to postpone or get a refund for courses scheduled during an unexpected deployment. To learn more, contact your school of interest to speak with an admissions representative.
