Benefits of distance learning for servicemembers

Distance learning is any education or course that is received outside of a traditional classroom setting. In more recent years, this term has become almost synonymous with online education, even though the latter refers to a computer-based course specifically. This is especially true now that schools, like Kaplan University, Ashford University, and Liberty University, have expanded their program selection for online degrees.

Many soldiers and veterans use online education as a way to obtain a degree because it provides an efficient and flexible way to pursue higher education and still serve your country. Most programs can be completed without any campus visitation required, and assignments and tests can be completed by the appropriate deadline.

Online programs generally follow the same curriculum as their campus counterparts from the same schools. However, curriculum can still vary greatly from school to school. It is also important to note that online programs are backed by the same accreditation a school has for its on-site degrees.

Accreditation and eligibility are still important factors in online education. Most schools with online programs will accept funding from G.I. Bills. However, you should always contact a school to check your eligibility and to make sure the school’s accreditation and program meets your career needs.
